Maxtor BlackArmor that made its debut at the beginning of 2008 is a full disk encryption external drive. When the product series was handed over to Seagate, it receives massive software overhual, but shares the same chassis with FreeAgent Go, measuring just 5" x 3" x 0.5". The BlackArmor PS 110 USB 2.0 drive is now in black, lending a more professional image than its colorful sibling.

In addition to full-system & file-based backup via scheduled or manual backup method for PCs, Seagate includes a very interesting "Try and Decide" feature that allows you to download and install new software titles or open email attachments in a protected partition so you can roll back the changes. Say, if you are installing some freeware and encounter a virus or malware, it’s as easy as hitting "stop" and let Seagate software to revert to the last known condition after a restart. This alone is pretty unique, but it doesn’t seem like the BlackArmor PS 110 is hardware encrypted even though the software does 256-bit AES security. Performance isn’t too shabby, topping at 30MB/s read and 25MB/s write. Last but not least the BlackArmor is backed by a generous 5-year warranty.

Who has the biggest external drive? The race will never end. Western Digital has the lead so far with its 2TB already making its way into My Book Essential. Designed to look like a standard hardcover book, the Essential 2TB like others in its series has a glossy black finish and features vent holes on top that spell out a message in Morse code.

The My Book comes with a standard WD Caviar Green 2TB with 32MB cache. The eco-drive is smart enough to stop drive platters after 10 minutes of inactivity, and the unit can also turn and off with the PC it is connected to. The drive’s capacity is however pushing USB 2.0 to the limit as trying to fill up the 2TB at 35MB/s+ transfer rate is a test of patience. Let’s hope USB 3.0 will be here before drive hits 3TB. The My Book Essential lacks visual gauge and backup software, but if what you are looking for is pure storage, this is the one to go for. We can expect Seagate will try not to fall behind much, but for now, Xtreme 1.5TB is still the largest the company offers.

The USB 2.0 Pocket Hard Drive sold by Seagate does not require additional drivers for most environments (see the notes below for your specific operating system). Keep in mind that you might have to load drivers for your USB host adapter before you can see the drive in the operating system

Windows Vista
No additional drivers are needed for these operating systems. The drivers for external drives (such as FreeAgent, OneTouch, Seagate portable, and Seagate pushbutton lines) are included as part of Vista and normally load automatically, but occasionally the drivers will need to be loaded manually. See this Knowledge Base article for more details.

Windows XP – If using Windows XP, Service Pack 1 added support for USB 2.0. If you are running Windows XP without the Service Pack, then you might not get the full performance of the drive.

Windows 2000 – Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 made several enhancements, including support for USB 2.0. If you are running Windows 2000 without Service Pack 4 or higher, you might not get the full performance of the drive.

Windows Me – Windows Me automatically loads drivers for the USB 2.0 Pocket Hard Drive. If you are using a USB 2.0 host adapter, however, you will need to load the drivers provided by your host adapter manufacturer (PCI card or motherboard). Also, note that some bundled versions of Windows Me might require the original installation CD or restore CD to access additional files. Certain OEM installations of Windows Me might call for the file USBNTMAP.SYS while attempting to load drivers for the external drive. This file can be located on the Windows Me installation or recovery CD in the WIN9X\BASE2.CAB folder.

Windows 98 SE – If you are using the USB connection, then additional drivers are required. Download the drivers for Windows 98 and USB connections to a temporary folder and run it to extract the component files. Next, follow these installation instructions and browse to your temporary folder to locate the drivers for the new hardware wizard.

Macintosh OS X – No additional drivers are needed for Mac OS X to see the drive. The first time you use the drive, however, you might need to format the drive for your operating system. See our document on how to format your drive for use with a Macintosh.
